LIVING MEMORIES TO TODAY |
|
PAST Michael had a chronic, life-threatening illness.
People could say he died of the confusion brought on by either the disease he
lived with or the medications he took to fight the disease, but that’s not
quite true. He really died because there
weren’t enough people that cared enough.
No one will ever really know why Michael walked along
the interstate in Montana when the nighttime temperatures got to freezing
even at the end of August. His family and friends will never understand why no
one stopped to help him when it was obvious he was in trouble. Professionals who knew him chose to keep on
driving when he tried to flag them down for help after spending a night under
an overpass with nothing to protect him from the cold other than a
lightweight jacket. On August 28, 2007, on his mother’s birthday and 11
days before his 43rd birthday, Michael died alone, cold, hungry,
thirsty, half-naked and in the weeds alongside that highway. People could say Michael died of his chronic illness
but he didn’t. He also died because his
resources were limited. His illness
and his resulting social status separated him from the everyday social
interactions upon which many of us depend.
Michael was born with a basket of lemons. Many times that basket nearly overflowed
but each time he found something of value in life. With support, he loved living
independently. He made a few
friends. He cared for the stray cats
that came to his door. Every person Michael’s Place serves has a story, a
history as a little boy or girl, as a teenager on his or her first date,
playing ball, perhaps getting married and having medical problems they either
inherited due to a freak of genetics, nurture or nature. If your illness has turned your life upside down,
call and let me tell you about Michael’s Place. We are able to provide caring services that
will enrich your life and allow you to move forward TODAY. After all, today is the only time any of us
is given Dianne

Lemons are a
sign of maturity and have been traditionally used in rites of passage. A mature lemon tree grows from a tiny
lemon seed as your life began as a small seed in your mother’s womb. Perhaps you look upon your illness as bad
luck. Perhaps you have gained a new
perspective on events and relationships.
Perhaps you have come to realize you still have a choice in how you
want to live TODAY. |
